You Can Support The LGBTQ+ Community By Eating Vegan Cupcakes

David Ruff

Carbs? Count me in. Eating carbs while helping a good cause? You don’t have to ask me twice. In the era of “corporate pride”, where Pride Month is characterized by big companies exploiting LGBTQ+ culture for profit, I was wary of working with any brands this month. When By Chloe, the plant-based NYC hotspot, reached out to me about their latest pride initiative — I was hooked.

By Chloe created the “Happy Hippie Cupcake”, a vegan confetti cupcake with vanilla frosting and rainbow sprinkles, in honor of the 50th anniversary of Pride. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the cupcake will be donated to the Happy Hippie Foundation: a non-profit organization founded by Miley Cyrus in 2014. Cyrus’ organization encourages young people to tackle widespread societal injustices facing LGBTQ+ youth.

By Chloe’s donations contribute to the Happy Hippie Foundation’s multifaceted services aimed at creating a positive future for suppressed LGBTQ+ youth. Program areas include prevention, direct response to meet basic immediate needs, support services to build long-term well-being, and public education to engage young people globally in systemic change through fundraising and awareness campaigns.

While the cupcakes may be fluffy and sweet, as a community we must address the myriad of pressing and prominent issues affecting LGBTQ+ citizens daily. This historic Pride Month is a time in which we must revere those who have and continue to make strides for LGBTQ+ progression and representation — who is to say we can’t do it while having fun with some cupcakes?
